Salt Shakers are a group of Salt Lake business people who donate their time and energy to serve as goodwill ambassadors for the Salt Lake Chamber and the Greater Salt Lake area. Shakers host ribbon cuttings and grand openings for local businesses and travel to cities throughout the United States to build relationships and strengthen the ties of commerce.
The Salt Shakers are a group of Salt Lake
business and professional people who donate their time and energy to serve as
goodwill ambassadors for the Salt Lake Chamber.
The objectives of the Salt Shakers are to
“promote” Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, the State of Utah, and the
Intermountain West as the greatest place in the world to work, live and raise
a family; to create a feeling of cohesion among the residents and business
people of this vast trading area; and, to act as official hosts for visitors
to the Greater Salt Lake area.
Activities of the Salt Shakers include: making at least one official goodwill
trip each year, meeting/greeting visiting dignitaries and conducting other
promotional activities that benefit the Salt Lake City business community.
By-Law Objectives
The principal objective of the by-laws of
the Salt Shakers is to maintain organizational policy and procedures that
allow for leadership continuity, continued proven & acceptable practices,
and orderly change when required. Other by-law objectives
include the maintenance of:
- Standards and procedures for new
membership qualifications/induction and membership levels
- Standards for continued membership
- Standard policies and procedures for
the election of officers.
- Standard policies delineating the
responsibilities of officers and the executive committee
- Policies and procedures to be followed
when revising by-laws
- Policies and procedures for the other
miscellaneous administrative details- primarily as they pertain to the
ongoing continuity of the organization through time.
Membership
Membership in the Salt Shakers shall
represent a cross section of the business community
A. Qualifications
Members of the Salt Shakers must display
the following qualifications to be considered for and remain an active member:
- Be a member in good standing in the
Salt Lake Chamber
- Be available to attend Salt Shaker
functions
- Have a leadership role or respected
status in his/her company
Membership levels are classified as
follows:
- Active members
- Executive members
- Honorary members
- Lifetime members
- Corporate membership
B. Active Membership
Membership into the Salt Shakers will be
considered by invitation only. Under the direction of the
Vice Head Shaker, an active Salt Shaker must present the prospective
member’s completed application to the Executive Committee. If
the executive committee approves the applicant, the prospective member’s
application is then forwarded onto the active Salt Shaker membership.
The selected prospect must be approved by the active membership before
being accepted for membership. Three dissenting votes
signed by active members will potentially disqualify the prospect.
Dissenting votes must be presented in writing to the Vice head Shaker
stating basic reasons for a negative vote. The Executive
Committee will hold any dissenting votes in confidence.
C. Executive Membership
A Salt Shaker is eligible for Executive
membership when he/she has served:
- in the organization for 12 years; or
- has served as head shaker and been in
the organization for at least 7 years
Retired, Executive Salt Shaker members do
not have to be a member of the Salt Lake Chamber.
D. Honorary Members
Honorary members of the Shakers are:
- Governor of the State of Utah
- Mayor of Salt Lake County
- Mayor of Salt Lake City
- Chairman of the Board of Governors of
the Salt Lake Chamber
- Any person who is nominated by an
active member of the Salt Shakers for Honorary Membership that meet any of
the following criteria as judged by the Executive committee:
1.
Having performed “outstanding service” to the Salt Shakers
2.
Be the spouse of a deceased Salt Shaker
If the Executive Committee approves the
nominee the nominee must then be approved by a 2/3 majority of the voting
membership present at the next regular meeting after written notice has been
given to the Salt Shaker Membership.
Honorary member’s attendance obligations
and monthly membership dues are waived. Honorary members
will be billed for functions they attend. Honorary members
have no voting rights.
E. Lifetime Members
A Salt Shaker is eligible for “Lifetime
Membership” (Silver Shaker) when he/she has served the Salt Shakers in an
exemplary manner for a minimum of 25 years. To be elevated
to this status the individual must present, in writing, his/her desire to be a
Lifetime member to the Executive Committee. The Executive
Committee will then review the applicant and vote on whether or not the
individual truly has served in “exemplary fashion.” Lifetime
status will be granted by a 2/3-majority vote.
Lifetime Shakers are eligible to
participate in all Salt Shaker functions, official trips, and will be included
on the official roster. Retired Lifetime members do not
need to be a member of the Salt Lake Chamber. A Lifetime
member’s attendance obligations and monthly membership dues are waived.
Lifetime members will be billed for functions they attend. Lifetime
members will not have voting privileges.
F. Corporate Membership:
A company purchased membership.
This level of membership does not belong to the individual Salt Shaker.
The company interested in membership must present an applicant and be
approved just as any other prospective Salt Shaker. Should
the company choose to make a change, the company will recommend a new Salt
Shaker representative that must be approved by the executive committee and be
judged by the qualifications (in section A) above. The
company is responsible to maintain dues and must provide a new white coat for
each new Salt Shaker appointed (as needed). Under this
membership, if the Salt Shaker is not available to attend a function they may
send another member of his/her firm to attend in his/her place. Corporate
Members are treated as active members throughout their membership regardless
of time and/or service as Head Shaker. Corporate members
are to be held to all standards as described for active members.
G. Officers
Officers of the Salt Shaker and their
duties are:
o
Head Shaker (President): Duties are to direct the
overall Salt Shaker administration, preside and conduct meetings, hold monthly
Executive Committee meetings, deliver an annual report of the Salt Shaker’s
activities before the Salt Lake Chamber Board of Governors, to attend Salt
Lake Chamber Board of Governors monthly meetings, and arrange the annual
installation banquet ending his/her year in office. He she
may appoint a committee to assist in these duties.
o
Vice Head Shaker (Vice President/Membership Chairman): Duties
are to preside in the absence of the Head Shaker, to recruit new members, to
encourage delinquent members to become active and to insure that records of
Salt Shaker attendance are maintained. He/she may choose a
committee to assist.
o
Salty Scribe (Secretary/Treasurer): Duties are to
prepare monthly financial reports and to direct the financial activities of
the organization. He/she may appoint a committee to assist.
o
Salt Spreader (Trip Planner): Duties are to plan
Salt Shaker good will trips, including all travel arrangements, arranging
lodging accommodations, food and beverage arrangements, meetings with
community leaders, etc. He/she may appoint committee to
assist.
The
above officers may appoint Shakers to arrange the annual golf tournament,
annual parties, and lunches.
H.
Appointed Positions
- Salty Scribbler: Appointed by
the Head Shaker. Duties are to prepare a quarterly
Newsletter titled “What’s Shaking” cataloging the ribbon cuttings,
openings, luncheons, etc. that the Shakers have attended. Maintain
and update the on-going calendar of events for the Shakers.
- Salty Dog (assistant to the Exec
Committee): Designated by the Salt Lake Chamber. Responsibilities
include assisting all of the above officers in performing their duties.
Keeps and maintains a record of Salt Shaker attendance, coordinates all
ribbon cuttings, sends out invoices, and informs the Salt Shakers of Salt
Lake Chamber news.
All officers, in addition to the
above duties, assume responsibility for any duties designated by the Executive
Committee.
I.
Attendance Standards:
Active
Salt Shakers are encouraged to attend 50% of all functions. This
level of commitment is necessary to support the organization and the Chamber.
J.
Active Member Terminations
Terminations of
membership in the Salt Shaker shall occur if any of the following conditions
exist:
1.
not a member in good standing in the Salt Lake Chamber; and/or
2.
failure to pay dues or other Salt Shaker bills (90 day delinquent); and/or
3.
failure to attend official functions at a level of “satisfactory” or
better for one year; and/or
4.
improper behavior as a representative of the community and of the Salt Shakers
If any part of the dues or other Salt
Shaker bills of an active member become 90 days delinquent, the Salty Scribe
shall send written notice to the active member that his/her membership will be
terminated automatically if the amounts that are 90 days delinquent are not
paid in full within one week.
If
the Executive Committee determines, after conducting an investigation, that
termination is appropriate by reason of inadequate attendance or improper
behavior, the Executive Committee shall notify the member of that conclusion
and shall afford the member the opportunity to meet with the Executive
Committee to present his/her case.
K. Initiation Fees, Dues and Bi
llings
The initiation fee includes the cost of
the Salt Shaker white sport jacket, Salt Shaker windbreaker, Salt Shaker
shirt, Salt Shaker nametag, and a one-time administrative fee. Dues
will be billed to each Active and Executive level member each month to cover
any or all of the following: luncheon expenses, administrative, promotional,
hosting, and any common or general expenses as determined by the Executive
Committee. Additionally, all Active members will be charged
for monthly luncheons regardless of attendance. Executive
members are only billed for lunches that he/she attends. The
Executive Committee determines the price and how funds will be collected for
all other Salt Shaker functions. Salt Shakers are
responsible for all expenses of partners/guests attending official or
unofficial events.
L. Election & Terms of Officers
All officers of the organization shall be
elected annually and shall serve for a term of one year, beginning January 1.
The Nomination Committee shall consist of all Past Head Shakers with
the immediate Past Head Shaker serving as Chair. Nominations
will be open to all Active Members in good standing. Any
Active Member in good standing may also make on nomination. It
is recommended that the Vice Head Shaker be nominated as Head Shaker.
A ballot will be sent to all Active Members in good standing once the
nomination committee has approved the nominated candidates. It
will be the responsibility of each voting Active Member to return their ballot
within one week (as directed on the ballot). Installation
of the new officers will take place in January at the Salt Shakers Annual
Installation Banquet.
M. AMENDMENTS AND/OR REVISIONS TO THE BY-LAWS
Amendments and/or revisions to these
By-Laws shall only be accomplished by:
1.
Two weeks written notice of the proposed amendments and/or revisions shall be
sent to all Salt Shakers.
2.
The amendments and/or revisions will then be voted on at the next regular
meeting and shall require a 2/3 majority vote of those Active Members in good
standing present at that meeting to order be adopted.
