For many Utahns, religion plays a fundamental part in their day-to-day life. Although Salt Lake City is known for the headquarters for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (also called Mormons), all major world religions are represented as well as non-denominational houses of worship.
Although Mormons form about 69% of the state’s population, Roman Catholics are the second largest religious group, followed by Methodists, Lutherans and Presbyterians. Utah also has a number of Eastern Orthodox, Buddhist, Muslim and Jewish congregations. There has been a slow but steady change in religious representation in Utah and the LDS church released data showing the slow decline of LDS members within the state. If the trend continues, by 2030 it is projected that LDS residents will no longer be the majority religious
sector*.
